San Nicolas de Los Garza, N.L.- If there ever was a way for Guadalajara to put an end to ten years with ought a win at Estadio Universitario, it was done brilliantly during Matchweek 8 of Liga MX Guard1anes 2020. Chivas played practical & effective and came away with a 1-3 victory over Tigres allowing it to climb up in the standings to 8th place with 11 points and just 6 goals conceded.
From the get go, both teams started off at a slow pace, measuring each other up, but by the sixth minute, Tigres threw the first blow. Guido Pizarro released a header way above Toño Rodriguez’ goal. Then it was Chivas’ turn. In the 13th minute, Macias placed a free-kick that slipped just past the left post . In the 17th minute, again Guadalajara, Antuna crossed the ball into JJ who headed the ball off target once more. The gloves were off.
Chivas’ played full press deep into Tigres territory. The high pressure paid off in minute 20 following a brilliantly lobbed-ball from Hiram Mier that found an open Antuna down the left side. He cut right, and calm shot the ball past Ortega to give Guadalajara the lead.
Two red cards in the remainder of the first half slow down the games intensity. A few minutes after Antuna’s goal, Tigres’ midfielder, Rafael Carioca was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for diving in the box. Before the end of the first half, Miguel Ponce was also sent off after receiving two yellow cards in less than 5 minutes, leveling things up and leaving both teams with 10 men.
At the start of the second half, Tigres went all in. In the 46th minute, Quiñones assisted Gignac who riffled a close-range shot that was scooped up by Toño Rodriguez. Guadalajara continued their high press and were able to increase the lead in minute 54 when Alexis Vega squeezed the ball into the box for JJ who swooped in and lear fly a right footed rocket past Ortega. Eleven minutes later, in the 63rd minute, Tigres pulled one back following a corner kick that found an open Gignac who smashed one home with a well placed header near the right base of the post.
Tigres’ fought hard for the equalizer and in minute 67 Gignac with a flashy bicycle kick that Toño managed to save without much trouble. After that it was all Chivas. El Chiverio took over possession and pushed hard for the goal to clinch the win. Vucetich brought in Villalpando, 'Gallito', Briseño and Angulo to regain control and create offensive chances. It wasn’t until minute 90 when Macias entered the box, dribbled past Reyes and shot but Ortega saved spectacularly for a corner. Nonetheless, the last nail in the coffin came during stoppage time. ‘Canelo’ Angulo took advantage of a deep pass after Briseño recouped just behind midfield, dribbled past Ortega and shot on an empty net. El Rebaño Sagrado will host Queretaro next Tuesday night at Estadio Akron.
