30/03/2023 14:57 / Club Deportivo Guadalajara

Chivas and Atlas will write another page in the history of the oldest rivalry in Mexican soccer, as this Saturday night they will face each other at the Estadio Jalisco as part of matchday 13 of the Clausura 2023, and below we present a recount of some of the most memorable moments of Guadalajara vs. Atlas at the Coloso de la Calzada Independencia.

- El Rebaño Sagrado's first victory over the Zorros at the Estadio Jalisco in the league came on Matchday 17 of the 1960-61 season, when they won 3-1 with goals from Salvador 'Chava' Reyes, Isidoro 'Chololo' Díaz and Francisco 'Paco' Jara.

- Mexico's most popular and beloved team thrashed the Red and Blacks 5-0 on matchday 20 of the 1969-70 campaign; the goals that afternoon were scored by Carlos 'Cuate' Calderón, Alberto Onofre, Javier 'Cabo' Valdivia, Raúl 'Willy' Gómez and Pedro Herrada.

- In the 'Campeonísimo's' last league title campaign, in 1969-70, the red-and-white squad showed no mercy to their neighbors and defeated them 5-1; the goals were scored by Carlos 'Cuate' Calderón, Alberto Onofre, Javier Valdivia, 'Willy' Gómez and Pedro Herrada.

- Since the origin of the rivalry, Chivas have shown who rules in Guadalajara and on Matchday 30 of the 1979-80 campaign, they achieved another overwhelming victory in the Clásico Tapatío, when they won 4-0 with goals from José Cedano, 'Pepe' Martínez, Manuel Manzo and 'Snoopy' Pérez.

- The Clasico Tapatio of the 11th J11 of the 1995-96 season marked the debut of Demetrio Madero at the helm of Guadalajara, after the departure of Osvaldo Ardiles as manager, and things couldn't have gone better, as with a brilliant display of soccer, El Rebaño defeated their fierce rival 5-2, thanks to goals from Gustavo Nápoles on two occasions, Ramón Ramírez, Carlos Turrubiates and Missael Espinoza.

- In the Clasico Tapatio in Winter 98, Chiverío gave a total masterclass, beating Atlas 4-2 on matchday 13, with a hat-trick from Luis García and another goal from Jesús 'Cabrito' Arellano.

- The Estadio Jalisco was doubly thrilled with the Quarter-Finals of Summer 2000, as Chivas left Atlas on the road and the great figure of that Liguilla series was none other than Marco Antonio 'Chima' Ruiz, the scorer of the two goals that defined that match.

- Alberto 'Venado' Medina's great performance led El Rebaño to beat their fierce city rivals 3-1 on Day 15 of the 2006 Apertura, as he scored a brace and also set up the pass for the goal scored by his compadre Omar Bravo.

- Omar Bravo wrote another memorable episode in the anecdotes of the Clásicos Tapatíos, as on Matchday 16 of the Apertura 2009 he scored the fastest goal in the history of El Rebaño Sagrado in the League, after 14 seconds with a shot that pumped the red-and-black goalkeeper. Aarón Galindo and a brace by Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández rounded off the scoring to make the final score 4-1.

- A save by Luis Michel in the last play of the match was vital to prevent Chiverío's defeat in Matchday 12 of the Clausura 2015. The scoreboard was tied at 1:1, but at 90'+4' a penalty kick was scored in favor of the Zorros, Alfonso 'Ponchito' González took it 'Panenka' style and that gave the red and white goalkeeper time to react and keep the ball after he had thrown himself on his left side.

- In that same tournament, the CL15, there was a Clásico Tapatío in the Quarterfinals. After a scoreless draw in the first leg at the Estadio Akron, the final match at the Jalisco was a real Guadalajara ball, Guadalajara won 1-4 thanks to a brutal performance by Marco Fabián, who scored a hat-trick, and a goal by Omar Bravo. The match was interrupted at 57' for 18 minutes due to red-and-black fans jumping onto the field to reproach their players for the harsh setback against our Chivas.
