Chivas falls in Concacaf Round of 16 first leg

06/03/2024 23:23 / Roberto García

Chivas had a night not to remember in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024 when they lost 0-3 to América on Wednesday night at the Akron Stadium.

The opponent capitalized on the fact that the Rebaño were down a man at the 60' mark due to Eduardo Torres' double yellow card to manage the closing stages of the match at their own convenience.

Guadalajara will look to do the heroic deed and turn the series around next Wednesday, March 13 at 8:30 PM, in the second leg of the series to be played at the Estadio Azteca.

The goals

-At 14', the rival took the lead from the 11th penalty spot through Julián Quiñones. Oscar Whalley guessed the direction of the shot, but his shot was not enough to stop the shot.

-At 69', América scored the second through Diego Valdés, with a shot inside the area.

-At 93', Henry Martín pushed a rebound inside the area to score the third for the visitors.

Dangerous goals

-At minute 10, Oscar Whalley earned the applause of the Rojiblanca Nation when he saved a left-footed shot by Alejandro Zendejas after a play full of rebounds in the Chivas area.

-In the 12th minute, Whalley again came up with an impressive save from Julián Quiñones' dry header on the counter.

-At 20', Akron's cry for a goal was drowned out when 'Chiquete' Orozco was left in front of the goal and scored a first-time shot from 'Pocho' Guzmán's set piece, just wide of the Azulcrema goal.

-At 26', 'Piojo' Alvarado appeared from a distance: he received between the lines to shoot first-time from underneath, but Malagón saved low.

-At 45+1', 'Pollo' Briseño got up amid everyone to finish off a cross from the right corner; he won on the edge of the area and took his shot, but the goalkeeper made a good save.

-The first part of the second half was for Chivas, just at 47', with a great service to the far post by 'Piojo' looking for 'Pocho', who was unable to connect with the Red and White captain.

-Two minutes later, a good individual play by Mateo Chávez left Erick Gutiérrez facing the goal. The Chiverío's 15-footer let his left-footed shot go over the opponent's goal.
