May 3 will always be very special for Club Guadalajara because on a day like today, in 1969, the most popular and beloved team in our country lifted its second Campeón de Campeones trophy. Below, we take a look back at that epic afternoon with fond memories.
Chivas, who had won the league title in the 1958-1959 season, faced Zacatepec, who went on to win the cup, in this important match. It was the replay of the 1957 Campeón de Campeones Final, in which the Rebaño emerged victorious and won its first such championship.
In the run-up to the match, the team from Morelos was considered the favorite, as they arrived at the match with a full squad, while the team from Guadalajara had four very significant absentees: José 'Jamaicón' Villegas, Francisco Flores, Isidoro Díaz and Héctor Hernández.
The game took place at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium in the #CapitalRojiblanca under torrential rain, which did not prevent the Rebaño Sagrado from giving a good soccer lesson, since despite being behind on the scoreboard, they were able to come from behind and with goals from Don 'Chava' Reyes and Sabás Ponce defeated Zacatepec 2-1.
The Red and White note...
- Salvador 'Chava' Reyes was a factor in both Champion of Champions titles against Zacatepec, as he scored in both finals.
