Chivas has put together a very competitive squad and has prepared well in search of changing history in its next participation in the Leagues Cup, which returns in 2025 with a revamped, more competitive format that focuses on intensifying the sporting rivalry between Liga MX and MLS.
This new edition of the binational tournament will feature all 18 Mexican First Division teams and 17 of the 30 MLS teams that earned the most points in the 2024 season, in addition to San Diego FC, with the aim of balancing the competition and ensuring that 58 of the 62 matches are between one Mexican team and one US team.
On this occasion, the Rebaño was placed in Group East 3 alongside Monterrey, Bravos de Juárez, FC Cincinnati, Charlotte FC, and the NY Red Bulls. Chivas will face the three US clubs in the First Round, which will be played continuously from July 29 to August 7, and will enjoy home advantage against Charlotte and Red Bulls, while visiting Cincinnati.
After that, the clubs will go back to their local tournaments, and only the ones that make it to the Final Phase will come back to the US to play the Quarterfinals and Semifinals during the week. The Grand Final of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, August 31.
It is important to note that the NO draws rule remains in place for the tournament, so if a game ends in a tie in regular time, both teams earn 1 point, but a penalty shootout is held, with the winner earning 1 extra point.
Although the teams and schedule for the 2025 Leagues Cup are designed based on groups to determine the 8 teams that will advance to the Final Phase, two tables were created: one for MLS teams and the other for Liga MX clubs. The top four teams in each table will advance to the Quarterfinals, where teams from one league will face teams from the other league, thus ensuring that until the Semifinals, there can be a match between two teams from the same country.
In addition to the Final, there will be a match for third place, as it is important to remember that the binational championship awards three tickets to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, which will be distributed among the Champion, Runner-up, and third place.
All matches will feature VAR, and refereeing will be coordinated by Concacaf.
