What was once just a dream in Jorge Vergara's mind is now a benchmark for sports architecture in our country. AKRON Stadium is more than just our home; it is a venue designed to host the best events in the world, as evidenced by its designation as one of the venues for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Today we celebrate 15 years since the opening of the Rojiblanca Fortress, and to commemorate this event as it deserves, we present 15 key moments that marked the legacy of this space and have remained in the memory of millions of Chivahermanos.
1. First match on the field
Before any tournament, the ball rolled for the first time in a prestigious friendly match: On July 30, 2010, Chivas faced Manchester United. That night, soccer and dreams shared the field for the first time at the Rojiblanca Fortress.
2. First official match
The story began with grandeur. The AKRON Stadium made its official debut in an enviable setting: the 2010 Copa Libertadores Grand Final, in which Chivas faced Inter de Porto Alegre of Brazil.
3. First goal in the stadium
Javier "Chicharito" Hernández scored the first goal in the stadium against Manchester United, just before joining the Red Devils and playing in the Premier League.
4. First national classic
April 10, 2011: First National Classic against América.
5. First concert
Miley Cyrus was responsible for inaugurating this venue as a place for the biggest and most spectacular concerts in Guadalajara. Since then, music and soccer have made the stadium a venue for all tastes.
6. First youth final
November 27, 2011: Second leg of the Under-17 Final between Guadalajara and Estudiantes Tecos.
7. First Clásico Tapatío
It was in Week 10 of the 2010 Apertura season that ended 2-2, with excitement from start to finish.
8 First national team match
September 4, 2010: International friendly match between Mexico and Ecuador.
9. First Playoffs
It was in the 2010 Apertura tournament. Chivas faced Monarcas in the quarterfinals. The match ended 1-1, but the stadium experienced its first Fiesta Grande with intensity.
10. Chivas' first title
April 19, 2017, lives on in the minds of the entire Rojiblanca Nation, as the Rebaño was crowned for the first time at AKRON Stadium after defeating Morelia in the Copa MX Final. A few weeks later, Chivas capped off that magical semester by lifting the Liga MX championship trophy after defeating Tigres in the 2017 Clausura Final.
11. First title in the history of the Liga MX Femenil
Chivas Femenil experienced a historic night in the 2017 Apertura, as in November of that year they defeated the Tuzas 3-0 to win the first championship trophy in the women's circuit.
12. Host of the FIFA U-17 World Cup
The AKRON Stadium hosted the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup, as it was one of the seven venues for the tournament.
13. The face of Guadalajara at the 2011 Pan American Games
In 2011, this venue hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Pan American Games held in Guadalajara. In addition, all the men's and women's matches of the competition were played here.
14. First international title
On April 25, 2018, the Rebaño defeated Toronto FC in the Concacaf Champions League Grand Final and lifted its second continental trophy.
15. First MX Expansion League title
El Tapatío was crowned here in the 2023 Clausura, defeating Atlético Morelia in a very exciting match.
