Today, the entire Rojiblanca Nation is celebrating! One of Guadalajara's most iconic figures is celebrating his 65th birthday: 'Maestro' Benjamín Galindo, a soccer player who forged an unforgettable career with Chivas and whom we Chivahermanos remember with deep affection. In honor of this celebration, we share with you the most memorable moments of his journey with the Rebaño.
Galindo's arrival at Chiverío
Benjamín began his professional career with Tampico Madero, where his outstanding performances caught the attention of Marcelino García Paniagua, then president of Club Rojiblanco, in an episode that Galindo recalls as follows: "My brother was working with a club executive, and that's when he said to him, 'Ask your brother (Benjamín) if he would like to come and play for Chivas.
His arrival took place in the 1986-1987 season, a moment that marked the beginning of what the 'Maestro' himself described as a dream. It was then that he chose the number 58 as his jersey number.
The 'Maestro's' debut and championship with the Rojiblancos
Galindo's arrival could not have been more significant, as in the same year he joined the team, Chivas was crowned champion in the memorable final against Cruz Azul, where the Rojiblancos won 4-2 on aggregate against the capital team. That title represented the ninth star for Guadalajara and the first in the Benjamín's career.
Was Galindo left-footed or right-footed?
During his time at Chivas, the Zacatecas native was known for his humility, leadership, and exceptional technique. He stood out for his ability to take free kicks and penalties with both feet, something he himself explains as follows: "I used my left foot to place the ball better and my right foot to kick it harder."
The end of an exemplary career
After eight years with the Rebaño and spells with other teams such as Santos and Cruz Azul, the Zacatecas native decided to end his professional career. He recalls that he made the decision calmly, as at 42 he was fully satisfied with the legacy he had built in soccer.
Debut as coach with Chivas
Benjamín was clear that he would remain involved in soccer, but now he would work his magic from the bench. He returned to Guadalajara to serve as assistant coach to Hans Westerhof during his time at the Rojiblanco Club.
Later, in the 2004 Apertura, his moment to shine arrived, as he had an unbeatable debut as Technical Director: in Week 1, Chivas faced Atlante in a historic match, beating the Potros 7-0 at the Jalisco Stadium.
His time with the Mexican national team
Of course, his presence with the Mexican national team also stands out, especially in El Tri's first participation in the 1993 Copa América. There, 'El Maestro' helped Mexico reach the Grand Final to face Argentina, the world champions in Italy 90.
In that final, Galindo showed his strength and commitment, as despite losing three teeth in a foul, he continued playing until the end of the match.
For everything you have contributed to the history of Chivas and for your great legacy, today the entire Rojiblanca Nation wishes you a happy birthday, 'Maestro'!
