Raúl 'Willy' Gómez: A player tailor-made for Chivas

13/02/2026 10:42 / Melissa Hernández

In the memory of the entire Nación Chiva, there will always be a very special place for the great figures of our institution—especially when we talk about a Rojiblanco from birth, who grew up and was shaped by the identity of Guadalajara until becoming an essential part of one of the club’s most glorious eras. Of course, we are talking about Raúl 'Willy' Gómez, whom today, on the occasion of his birthday, we remember by revisiting his journey and history with the team he always loved.

Where was Gómez born?

Raúl was born on February 13, 1950, in Guadalajara. Although his official registration took place in Mexico City, his life, upbringing, and identity were always tied to the Perla Tapatía. In different interviews, he made it clear that he never felt he belonged anywhere other than Guadalajara.

A bond with Chivas since childhood

'Willy' is a clear example that a Chiva isn’t made—it’s something you’re born with. After a stint with Club Deportivo Oro, he arrived at Guadalajara at just 12 years old to begin a path that would make him unforgettable.

Why was he called 'Willy'?

At the time, World Cup Willie—the lion who became the first World Cup mascot—was very present in popular culture. Since Gómez was fair-skinned, his family began associating him with that character. His mother, who had wanted to name him Guillermo since before he was born, found in that nickname the perfect way to keep that name alive. 'Willy' was born at home and stayed with him for life.

His place in the 'Campeonísimo'

With the Chivas DNA deeply rooted in him, his growth and professional debut coincided with the era of the 'Campeonísimo'. He was part of the squad that won the final titles of that golden era, highlighted by the 1969–1970 season, when the Rebaño lifted the Liga, Copa MX, and Campeón de Campeones trophies.

His playing style

Raúl played out wide, where he brought depth and dynamism to the team. With the charisma that defined him, he never stopped running for these colors, earning the affection of those who saw him wear the Rojiblanca and the trust of all his teammates. Although he wasn’t a typical goal poacher, he scored goals that remain vivid in the memory of the Rebaño faithful.

The goal at the Estadio Azteca

One of the most special came on June 24, 1972, in the first leg of the semifinal at the Estadio Azteca. In a tight match, Gómez won the ball back in midfield, followed the play, and, on the edge of the six-yard box, finished with great composure and precision to give Guadalajara the lead heading into the return leg at home.

The National Team

His level also led him to wear the jersey of the Mexican National Team. He made his debut in 1970 and played six matches with El Tricolor, scoring one goal.

For all the dedication you always gave and the love you had for these colors, today the entire Nación Rojiblanca comes together to send you a heartfelt embrace up to the heavens, 'Willy'.
