Diego Campillo and His Decisive Night on the Road to the Semifinals

12/05/2026 14:47 / Enrique Noriega

Diego Campillo was one of the standout performers on Saturday night at Estadio AKRON. In a series that demanded personality and bravery to sustain such an aggressive game plan, the Guadalajara defender responded with a top-level performance and became a key factor in Chivas’ comeback against Tigres, securing the team’s ticket to the Clausura 2026 Semifinals.

Gabriel Milito opted for a three-man backline and found the ideal leader in Campillo to command it from the sweeper role. Beyond maintaining defensive order, the academy product took on the enormous responsibility of protecting open spaces and covering the ground Chivas exposed by pushing forward and playing high up the pitch near the opponent’s goal.

Chivas’ approach was aggressive from the opening whistle, applying high pressure and intensity to force Tigres deep into their own half. But for that plan to work, someone needed to protect the team’s back line. That’s where Diego Campillo stepped up.

The defender constantly found himself in high-risk one-on-one duels and almost always came out on top. He neutralized powerful attackers like Rodrigo Aguirre and showcased tremendous ability to anticipate plays, recover defensively, and handle decisive situations. He recorded 3 interceptions, 3 clearances, and 5 recoveries, while also winning 3 ground duels and all 4 aerial duels he contested. He was dribbled past only once throughout the 90 minutes.

He even produced a crucial goal-saving moment late in the match, making a perfectly timed tackle inside the box to dispossess Ángel Correa just before he could shoot on goal.

Campillo also showed plenty of confidence on the ball. He completed 63 of his 68 passes for a 93% accuracy rate, connected on 5 long passes, and consistently drove forward with possession. He even came close to scoring with a long-range effort that narrowly missed Nahuel Guzmán’s goal.

Campillo’s performance confirmed the excellent form he is currently in and made it clear that he has the personality to embrace responsibility in high-pressure scenarios. He led by example and was one of the pillars of Gabriel Milito’s side on a night that ended with Chivas advancing to the Clausura 2026 Semifinals. For those and many more reasons, the Durango native is the player to watch heading into the first leg of the Semifinals against Cruz Azul.
