Javier ‘Zully’ Ledesma is one of those names forever etched into the history of Guadalajara. Today, on his 68th birthday, Nación Rojiblanca celebrates the life and career of one of the great figures to have defended the Rebaño Sagrado’s goal.
His story was defined by spectacular saves, a distinctive personality between the posts, and a deep sense of belonging to these colors. With that in mind, we look back at five moments that form part of the legacy ‘Zully’ built throughout his career as a Rojiblanco.
1. The Path That Led Him to Defend the Rojiblanco Goal
Before becoming the goalkeeper remembered by the Chivahermanos, Ledesma had to make his own way through the Cantera Rojiblanca.
His first minutes with the First Team came in a Nuevos Valores tournament. That experience was far from easy: with the pitch wet, a ball slipped through his gloves and ended up in the back of the net. Rather than slowing his development, he continued his training in the youth ranks and later joined Tapatío to play in the Segunda División.
His strong performances opened the door to training sessions with the First Team. Eventually, Carlos Miloc gave him the opportunity to make his official debut with Chivas and begin a journey that would ultimately make him one of Guadalajara’s great goalkeepers.
2. The Day His Story With Chivas Began
December 16, 1979, became a special date for Javier Ledesma. On Matchday 13 of the 1979-80 season, the goalkeeper was entrusted with defending Guadalajara’s goal against Unión de Curtidores.
The debut ended in a 2-1 victory at Estadio Jalisco and marked the beginning of a career that would see ‘Zully’ become one of the Rebaño’s most important figures between the posts. In total, he defended the Rojiblanco goal for 12 years, across two different spells.
3. A Goalkeeper Ahead of His Time
Talking about ‘Zully’ also means remembering one of the qualities that set him apart throughout his career: his ability to play with his feet.
Ledesma was one of the first Mexican football goalkeepers willing to come out of his box and consistently take part in building attacks. A quality that, over the years, became increasingly common among goalkeepers.
4. A Historic Night Against América
The 1982-83 season semifinal produced one of the most memorable chapters in Chivas’ history against América. Guadalajara arrived at Estadio Azteca having lost the first leg 2-1, but turned the series around with a 3-0 rout.
‘Zully’ was part of that unforgettable night that sent the Rebaño through to the Grand Final.
5. The Championship That Confirmed His Greatness
The 1986-87 season represented one of the most important points in Ledesma’s career. Under Alberto Guerra, Chivas finished as league leaders with 69 points and had the best defense in the competition, conceding just 26 goals. ‘Zully’ was a fundamental part of that defensive performance.
After overcoming Monterrey and Puebla in the playoffs, Guadalajara reached the Final and defeated Cruz Azul 4-2 on aggregate to claim the championship.
