Do You Remember Chivas’ Rout of Atlas That Ended in a Rojiblanco Championship?

The Clásicos Tapatíos always carry something special, especially for players who come through the Cantera Rojiblanca, who learn from a young age what it means to face the team from Nextipac. Today, we look back at one of the most memorable moments for two of them: when Diego Campillo and Miguel Gómez lifted the trophy against their city rivals.

Over the years, Jalisco’s fiercest rivalry has been played at full intensity, even in the youth categories, where Chivas have faced their archrivals countless times, including several decisive matchups. One of those came in the 2020 Guard1anes Tournament of Liga MX U-20, when Chivas and Atlas met in the Grand Final. On December 6, 2020, Estadio AKRON witnessed a superb performance from our young players, who secured a 4-2 victory and lifted the category’s trophy.

Guadalajara needed less than a minute to strike. In the 1st minute, Miguel Gómez played a through ball to Benjamín Sánchez, who flicked it with a backheel into the path of Zahid Muñoz. The Rojiblanco attacker took his shot and hit the post, but reacted quickly to the rebound and fired the ball into the back of the net.

Chivas maintained the pressure and were rewarded again in the 21st minute. A corner kick traveled across the six-yard box, and Benjamín Sánchez arrived at the far post right on time to turn the ball home and make it 2-0. However, the Rojinegros managed to respond before halftime. In the 38th minute, a free kick led to a header that Eduardo García initially managed to save, but the rebound remained loose, allowing Luis Martínez to pounce and pull one back for the visitors.

The 2-1 scoreline left everything to play for in the second half, but then Néstor Díaz stepped up. He won the ball in his own half and drove all the way toward the Rojinegros’ penalty area. He left several opponents behind along the way and, upon entering the box, was brought down by the goalkeeper, resulting in a penalty. Zahid Muñoz stepped up and calmly placed his shot into the left corner to make it 3-1. Atlas pulled another goal back, keeping the tension high until the final minutes, but Guadalajara were determined to keep the trophy at home. In stoppage time, Sebastián Martínez received the ball inside the box and coolly slotted a low shot across goal to seal the 4-2 victory and crown the Rebaño Sagrado champions against their fiercest city rivals.

Now, Guadalajara are ready for another edition of the Clásico Tapatío, this Saturday’s matchup in Jornada 11 of the Apertura 2026, as they look to extend their unbeaten streak against the team from Nextipac to seven consecutive matches.
