Chivas Refuse to Give Up and Earn a Point in the Clásico Tapatío

10/10/2026 21:41 / Roberto García

With the courage, resilience, and attacking initiative that define them, Chivas earned an important point in the Clásico Tapatío after coming from behind to draw 1–1 against Atlas in Matchday 11 of the Apertura 2026.

El Rebaño Sagrado now has 19 points in the tournament and remains among the top teams in the standings.

Derbies are played differently, and Gabriel Milito’s side took the initiative from the start. The match also saw Leonel Calderón make his first start, delivering a solid performance down the left flank. Rain brought by Hurricane Simón turned the game into a battle of transitions, as the fast, wet surface favored runs into space and Guadalajara’s ball movement.

Although finishing had eluded the team, Chivas maintained the mentality that has helped them overcome adversity so many times, even after Atlas took the lead. The reward finally came late in the match through Ángel Sepúlveda.

The efforts of El Chiverío were constantly supported and recognized by the Rojiblanca Nation, whose fans never stopped making their presence felt at the Estadio Jalisco.

Chivas is now focused on its next Apertura 2026 fixture, when it hosts Tigres at Estadio AKRON on Saturday, October 17, for Matchday 12.

The Goals
51' — Kevin Zenón: The Atlas player scored on a counterattack after finding himself one-on-one with Chivas goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel.
84' — Ángel Sepúlveda: Redemption for “Sepu”! The ball fell to Ángel Sepúlveda inside the box, and he calmly finished past the advancing Vargas.

The Chances
21' — Brian Gutiérrez turned near the edge of the attacking third, escaped his marker, and attempted a left-footed shot toward the post, but the ball went wide.
25' — “Piojo” created space for himself and tried to curl an inside-footed shot into the top corner, but the ball failed to dip enough.
27' — Luis Rey took a free kick from a dangerous position, sending a shot narrowly wide of the top corner.
On the following play, “Piojo” intercepted Atlas’ attempt to play out from the back and laid the ball off to “Sepu,” who tried to chip Vargas, but the goalkeeper’s outstretched hand prevented the goal.
33' — Rey appeared at the far post following a corner kick and directed a downward header toward the near post, forcing the goalkeeper into a difficult save.
38' — Ricardo Marín appeared to score Chivas’ opener after reacting to a rebound inside the six-yard box that Vargas had spilled, but the goal was ruled out for an earlier offside.
74' — Ángel Sepúlveda took a powerful, angled penalty from the spot, but Vargas saved it.
