Estadio AKRON Unveils Plaque Celebrating Its LEED Operations & Maintenance Gold Certification

16/10/2026 12:22 / Club Deportivo Guadalajara

Club Deportivo Guadalajara and Estadio AKRON have taken another step forward in their commitment to sustainability. This Friday, the venue unveiled the plaque recognizing its LEED Operations & Maintenance (O+M) Gold certification, an international distinction that evaluates the environmental performance of buildings in their day-to-day operations.

The Home of the Mexicans was recognized for its efficient energy management, proper water and waste management, and its ability to deliver an outstanding experience that exceeds the expectations of visitors and fans alike.

The ceremony was led by Ana Paula Jiménez, Chivas’ Sustainability and Human Rights Coordinator; Luis Pineda, FIFA World Cup 2026 Mexico Sustainability and Human Rights Cluster Manager; and Rebeca Ortiz, Director of Business Development in Mexico for Green Business Certification Inc. The event was also attended by Club Deportivo Guadalajara executives and various members of the club’s staff.

Upon receiving the plaque, Ana Paula Jiménez highlighted the club’s years of dedicated effort, emphasizing that the recognition reflects the values and vision of the institution.

Chivas commitment to sustainability goes beyond any event. It is part of the vision and values that define us as Omnilife-Chivas Group and of our sporting legacy. The LEED certification is the result of years of commitment, as well as the efforts of everyone who contributed to this achievement.

Obtaining this certification allows us to recognize Estadio AKRON’s standing in the world, as part of an international community of sports venues that meet the highest standards of operation and sustainability. It also commits us to continuing to advance toward global sustainability.

For his part, Luis Pineda praised the venue’s environmental initiatives and expressed his hope that this distinction would inspire other sports venues across the country to strengthen their sustainable practices.

The preservation of green spaces and the management of resources at this stadium are incredible to me. We must recognize the tremendous effort Estadio AKRON has made to respect nature and implement initiatives that improve its surroundings.

May this plaque serve as recognition of sustainability, but also as a turning point that encourages stadiums across Mexico to become increasingly mindful of their surroundings.

During her remarks, Rebeca Ortiz highlighted the vision and legacy of Don Jorge Vergara (RIP), who championed the construction of a venue that addressed these issues from its initial conception and design. She also recognized Club Deportivo Guadalajara’s commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment surrounding the stadium.

Estadio AKRON has a story worth telling because it broke away from the traditional vision of a stadium. It was built with an architectural approach that sought to integrate it into its surroundings.

A project’s legacy is also preserved through the decisions made in its management: how it is maintained, how it operates, and how it responds to the needs of its surroundings.

I want to recognize Club Deportivo Guadalajara for having a venue that forms part of Mexico’s sporting identity, because the projects that leave a lasting mark are those built on a strong vision and a commitment to making it endure.

Estadio AKRON reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, respect for its surroundings, and the implementation of initiatives that promote sustainability throughout its operational processes. The goal is to maintain its status as a world-class venue that delivers a first-rate experience for all Chivahermanos and visitors.
