Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on October 26, 1933, he was one of the figures who left their mark on the most glorious era of Rebaño Sagrado and a key member of the ‘Campeonísimo’ team.

His goals, titles, and outstanding performances have kept his legacy alive in the memories of Chivahermanos. That is why, on this special day, we look back at three of the most memorable moments of his career with the team he loved.

Top 3 Moments of Crescencio ‘Mellone’ Gutiérrez with Chivas

1. A Debut That Announced the Arrival of a Legend

Crescencio Gutiérrez was just 19 years old when he was given the opportunity to wear the Rojiblanco jersey for the first time. Just one training session with the reserve team was enough to earn him a place in the squad for a match against León. In his debut, ‘Mellone’ scored twice against the legendary Antonio ‘Tota’ Carbajal, a performance that foreshadowed the history he would go on to write with Guadalajara.

2. A Key Figure in the ‘Campeonísimo’ Era

Wearing the number 9 jersey, ‘Mellone’ became one of the leading figures of Guadalajara’s golden era. In the 1956–57 season, he won the scoring title with 19 goals and played a fundamental role in securing the first league championship in the club’s history. Throughout his career as a Rojiblanco, he won five league titles and was part of the team that captured the institution’s first Concacaf championship.

His scoring instincts were also on full display in the Clásicos: he scored five goals against Atlas and another five against América in league matches, making him one of the top scorers in both rivalries.

3. A Goal to Remember Against River Plate

In 1958, Chivas faced River Plate in the Mexico City Pentagonal tournament. That night, ‘Mellone’ produced one of the most memorable plays of his career, beating goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo, then considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, with a left-footed shot into the top corner. That goal showcased his quality and his ability to shine on the biggest stages.
