Twelve years later, Chivas will face Atlante once again in a Liga MX match. Matchday 15 of the Clausura 2026 tournament will bring together two of Mexican soccer’s most historic and traditional clubs, as the Rebaño hosts the Potros this Saturday during their return to the top flight.
With more than eight decades of history between them, this matchup has given Chivahermanos plenty of unforgettable moments. Here, we take a look back at some of the highlights of this rivalry.
Chivas’ First Match in Mexico’s New Professional League
The first match Guadalajara played in the newly established Mexican Professional First Division League, during the 1943-1944 season, was against Atlante at Parque Asturias in Mexico City. On that occasion, the Guadalajara side defeated the Potros 4-1, with goals from Luis Reyes, Max Prieto, and a brace from Pablo ‘Pablotas’ González.
A Head-to-Head Record Painted Rojiblanco
Guadalajara heads into this reunion with a positive record against the Azulgranas. In the short-tournament era, Chivas has recorded 17 wins, 12 draws, and 14 losses in 43 meetings.
When the two teams have faced off in the Perla de Occidente, the Rebaño has also enjoyed the upper hand, posting 11 wins, 5 draws, and 6 losses. It is worth noting that, of those 22 meetings during the short-tournament era before Atlante’s relegation, only three took place at Estadio AKRON.
A Rout Chivahermanos Will Never Forget
One of the most emphatic results in recent Mexican soccer history came in the Apertura 2004 tournament, when Chivas crushed Atlante 7-0 at Estadio Jalisco. That afternoon, the Rebaño showcased its attacking firepower with goals from Adolfo Bautista, Alejandro Vela, Ramón Morales, Francisco Palencia, Alberto Medina, and Ramón Ramírez.
Which Players Have Worn Both Jerseys?
The histories of Chivas and Atlante are also linked by players who have represented both clubs. Among them are Carlos Turrubiates, Salvador Carmona, Noé Zárate, Javier Aguirre, Alberto Coyote, Manuel Sol, Daniel Guzmán, Gustavo Nápoles, Ignacio Vázquez, Carlos Hermosillo, Luis García, and Rafael Márquez Lugo, all of whom played a part in different chapters of both clubs’ histories.
