The night that Omar Bravo became immortal

12/08/2024 11:05 / Roberto García

There are many profiles in soccer: defenders, with imposing presence, strength and sacrifice; midfielders, who range from architects of the game to those who navigate the flanks at full speed. There are also the goalkeepers, who bear the responsibility that few assume: guarding the goal and preventing it from being breached at all costs.

But there are also different beings who, for the most part, are in charge of making a difference in the scoreboard: the strikers. Club Deportivo Guadalajara has had attackers of the highest quality, starting with Salvador Reyes, the red-and-white team's most important player in history. However, Don 'Chava' himself was able to enjoy -and even share the field- with someone who nine years before had broken his record of 122 goals as the top scorer in the colors of the Chivas Rayadas.

We are, of course, talking about Omar Bravo, who on a night like today, but in 2015, immortalized his iconic number 9 in the history of the Rebaño Sagrado. It could not have been any other way: at the Akron Stadium, with the Rojiblanca Nation present and with the captain's ribbon on his left arm, in a matter of 2 minutes he sealed his status as a Red-and-White legend.

It was Date 4 of the 2015 Apertura where the schedule pitted the Chiverío against Monarcas Morelia, and it was at the 26th minute of play that he scored his first goal. From a cross from the left by David 'Avión' Ramírez, the player from Sinaloa anticipated the defense to push the ball into the back of the net, tying Reyes in the list of Rojiblanco strikers.

Bravo took the ball in the final third of the field, opened up on the right for Carlos Fierro and cut into the heart of the area, where the 'Wero' respected his movement with a cross to the near post; the Guadalajara captain anticipated his marker -as he has done so many times throughout his career- and scored again, and for the 123rd time in his Chivas Rayadas jersey.

At that moment, amidst his prayers to heaven and the embrace of his teammates, Omar Bravo Tordecillas became the top scorer in the history of Deportivo Guadalajara. The applause of the Chiva Nation was imminent when he came on as a substitute at 76', and also when he received recognition from the board of directors for the feat of that night on August 12, as well as a part of the net of the north goal of the Akron Stadium, in which he consolidated the history that, since his years in the Cantera Rojiblanca, he began to write.
